The Nightmare Palace
08 November 2009 @ 05:56 pm
Title: Deserved
Rating: all ages
Characters: Kara, Boomer, brief appearance by Lee
Genre: genfic, mostly fluffy
Warnings: Vague spoilers through 1.05 You Can't Go Home Again
Word Count: 1538
Summary: Sharon looks back at Kara with a wink. "So," she says, lips curling into a smirk. "You gonna tell me why you've got a picture of the new CAG up in your locker?".

Author's Note: This came out of a need to write someone ribbing Kara about the picture in her locker. I decided post-YCGHA was the best way to go, since then I could use the excuse that, until her knee healed, Kara had someone helping her get dressed and such. That person became Sharon, and then Lee popped in for a bit, and just for kicks, I threw in a reference to one of my favourite fanfic cliches, and all of a sudden I had a 1500+ word fic.

Title comes from a quote by Walt Whitman, in vague reference to Kara: "I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don't believe I deserved my friends."

Kara's been out of sickbay and back in her bunk for a week when Sharon plops herself down at Kara's feet, disturbing her from the cheap paperback horror she's been reading in her downtime. )

Title: Out of This Necessity
Rating: All ages
Characters: Kara Thrace, Lee Adama
Genre: Vague angst/fluff? Something like that...
Warnings: Small spoilers for 3.10 The Passage and events in 3.11 The Eye of Jupiter.
Word Count: 1333
Summary: She's staring at the photograph and she's talking about Zak but her fingers are tracing his figure instead and Lee wonders how long she's been thinking about this.

Author's Note: I was re-watching season 3 again a few weeks back and I realised that, while Unfinished Business certainly laid the groundwork for Kara and Lee to rekindle their relationship, it didn't actually explain exactly how they ended up in the not-entirely-new affair we see them in in Eye of Jupiter. This doesn't actually explain how they got there, either, but it's definitely a start.

Kat has been dead for six hours and seventeen minutes when Lee enters the bunkroom to find Kara standing before her open locker, fingers tracing over the picture taped to the mirror. )

Title: Doesn't Hurt That Much
Rating: All ages
Characters: Felix Gaeta, Kara Thrace
Genre: General
Warnings: Really really tiny spoiler for 2.08 Final Cut
Word Count: 1248
Summary: Looking back on it later, Felix thinks maybe he should have known. Felix learns the hard way exactly how risky it is to drink at the card table with Starbuck.

Author's Note: This is for [info]latenightcuppa who assured me that this wasn't totally stupid, and because she's a Gaeta fan :D

She's loud, laughing and drinking and swearing like the Viper jock she is, and Felix wonders how in the hell this woman could have gotten the Lieutenant's stars pinned on the collar of her jacket. )

It occured to me that I could really make better use of my tags by adding specific types of stories and themes and what-have-you instead of just listing characters and ratings. So I went through all of the fic posted here and extensively re-tagged everything. Most of them are fandom-specific and refer to a certain type of fic within that fandom, so I felt like I should explain my system so that it's not quite so confusing.

Hopefully this is helpful and not entirely useless to anyone looking for a specific type of fic. This post will be linked to in the topbar if you ever want to look something up. The list will be updated any time new tags are added, so check back if you notice anything which seems unfamiliar to you.

{ General }
Individual characters all have their own tag, and length is tagged for each fic, along with which fandom universe the fic belongs to.

Title: Letting Go
Rating: Teen
Characters: Kara Thrace, Brenda Costanza
Genre: Angst-ish
Warnings: Major spoilers for 3.10 The Passage
Word Count: 609
Summary: The sound Starbuck makes could almost be a laugh, but it's weak and rough, like her throat can't remember how to produce sound. "Maybe that was her mistake," she says, and he thinks she doesn't mean it.

Author's Note: I put off posting this for a while because I wasn't really sure if I could stand reading it. I really like this piece, I think I did a good job on it, but it's about an episode that ALWAYS makes me cry. But since I was posting another fic, Tell The Gods, I figured I should go ahead and post this one, too.

He finds her later in the memorial hallway, still staring at the picture she'd pinned on the wall. )

Title: Tell The Gods
Rating: All ages
Characters: Brendan Costanza, mentions of Starbuck and Apollo
Genre: General
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1170
Summary: There are 800 other first-year cadets at the Academy to choose from; if Brendan Costanza washes out, the Colonial Fleet won't even notice.

Author's Note: I wrote this in the middle of my Intro to Psych class instead of taking notes like a good student. Guess I'm about as good at achoolwork as Brendan is XD Anywho, (sort of) short piece exploring HotDog's life before he was HotDog.

The title comes form one of my favourite quotes, "If you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans."

Brendan Costanza is pretty well certain he's going to get kicked out of the Academy. )

Title: Headcase
Rating: All ages
Characters: Doc Cottle, Lee Adama, and a brief appearance by Kara Thrace
Genre: General silliness
Warnings: Incredibly vague spoilers for the mini and 33
Word Count: 624
Summary: After five solid days on the run, Lee is forced to check in with the doctor. Vaguely implied Kara/Lee shippiness.

Author's Note: This is what I get for spending my evenings alternately reading Kara/Lee fanfic and studying neuroscience. I read about an obscure part of the brain and suddenly I've got sciencey!bunnies like no one's business XD This is silly and random and probably not really great, but I thought it was too funny not to post.

Lee hates doctor's appointments at the best of times, but for the first time he's seriously considering going AWOL rather than having to sit through this one. )

Title: A Strange Sort Of Silence
Rating: Teen, because it's rather serious
Characters: Karl Agathon, Lee Adama
Genre: Serious angst
Warnings: Spoilers for 3.17 Maelstrom and all that it entails
Word Count: 535
Summary: "The room is spinning and Helo hears his heartbeat over everything else, thump-thump, thump-thump so fast and it feels like a sin."

Author's Note: This is possibly the most angsty fic I've ever written, and I love writing angst. This was actually very hard to write, because I'd just watched the episode in question and I wrote this not a minute after, literally with tears in my eyes, but I felt like I had to write this immediately.

The title comes from a quote by Gabrielle Zevin: "There's a strange sort of silence when you're dying. It's as if you're in a glass room, and the walls keep getting thicker and thicker."

Apollo's voice over the radio sounds broken and Helo wonders if Lee is as close to tears as he is, or if his grief is too terrible for that. )

Title: What We Have to Give
Rating: All ages
Characters: Kara Thrace, Anastasia Dualla
Genre: General
Warnings: Spoilers for 2.12 Resurrection Ship 2
Word Count: 811
Summary: "The tension in Dee's face says she's waiting for a punch and Kara takes a moment to wonder why, but Starbuck's pulling her over to the side and she's wondering how to phrase this and neither of them are really thinking all that much about hurting her right now."

Author's Note: Originally this piece was going to be much more angsty and bitter, with some arguing and things, but when I was writing it, I decided on playing with a different kind of dynamic for these two and suddenly the whole thing just worked out so much better. This is pretty different from how I usually see these two, but I think it really works here.

The title comes from this quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think."

She hears about them from Helo, and if something in her chest seems to wrench sideways for a moment, at least she's got this feeling of relief to focus on instead. )

Title: We Bend, We Break
Rating: Teen
Characters: Kara Thrace, Lee Adama
Genre: Angst
Warnings: Spoilers for 2.15 Scar
Word Count: 1821
Summary: "So it doesn't matter that I'm here with you, right now." Lee's voice sounds wrong somehow, suddenly rough-edged, and wonders if Kara will care. "It doesn't matter that you've got someone alive and well right in this room, someone who cares about you, because you don't start caring until they're dead."

Author's Note: This serves as an extended version of Lee and Kara's almost-frakking scene from Scar. I always thought that Lee wanted to say a lot in that scene but never got the chance. So I took pity on him and let him say what he needed to say.

Special thanks to [info]shah_of_blah for being awesome and helping me out with this one when I had no idea if it was going to work at all.

Lee knows, the moment he says it, that he's gone too far. He sees Kara's hand come up almost in slow motion and thinks maybe he could stop her if he tried, but then her palm connects with his cheek and it's too late. )

Title: The Nature of a Paradox
Rating: Teen
Characters: Zak Adama, Kara Thrace, Lee Adama
Genre: General
Warnings: Spoilers for 4.20 Daybreak Part 2
Word Count: 1773
Summary: Somewhere in the back of his mind, Zak knows he isn't angry. His big brother's got his girlfriend on their dining room table and he's pretty sure they're about ten seconds from actually coming undressed when the wine glass falls off and shatters, but he knows, as soon as he speaks up, sounding muddled and drunk still, that he's not actually angry with either of them. Rather, he's trying to save them from themselves.

Author's Note: This is the flashbacks from Daybreak Part 2 from Zak's POV as an unnoticed witness to everything that happens with Kara and Lee.

Zak Adama is a lightweight compared to his girlfriend, but he's quite aware of that fact. He's also not as clueless as he sometimes thinks people believe him to be. )

Title: A Bird in the Hand
Rating: eh, teen-ish? There's a little bit of swearing
Characters: Helo, the Chief, mentions of others
Genre: General
Warnings: Spoilers for 2.09 Flight of the Phoenix
Word Count: 3074
Summary: There's another silence, and Helo can tell they're both pointedly not looking at each other, still unsure if they're enemies or friends. It's Tyrol who makes that call, though it takes Helo a moment to realise it.

Author's Note: This is a parallel to the whole of Flight of the Phoenix. When I was watching the episode, it seemed like there was a lot of potential for scenes with these two, and I really wanted to play with how they came from fighting in the beginning to reconciling a little near the end.

The title comes from the expression "one in the hand is worth two in the nest", which I though was fitting for the dynamic of this fic.

Also, this is my first BSG fic, so I am very excited :D and also very anxious, so please let me know how I did on this one.

By the time Helo's been back on Galactica a week, he's gotten used to eating alone. )

Title: Déjà vu
Rating: all ages
Characters: Anna Milton
Genre: Pseudo-angst?
Warnings: Vague spoilers for SPN 4.10 onward
Word Count: 416
Summary: Anna thinks strangely that it's become so much harder to go upstairs than it is to go down them.

Author's Note: Random little drabble that popped into my head out of the blue.

Anna is fifteen and angry, angsty, apathetic, trading sunny smiles for sulky shrugs and feeling so (God)damned alone, even though she knows she isn't. )

Title: Thunderheads
Rating: teen-ish for very slight boykissing
Characters: Remus/Sirius
Genre: Fluff, kind of
Warnings: None
Word Count: 697
Summary: An afternoon spent out-of-doors. Short, sweet, and summery.

Author's Note: Written for [info]rs_500. The challenge: for [info]brighty18; keywords: ticks, peonies, soft; dialogue: "I'm not your chew toy, love."

It is a beautiful summer's day; the breeze has taken the edge off the day's heat, and the grass on the hill they boy is lying on is soft and tickles the back of his neck. )

Title: O Brother Where Art Thou
Rating: teen-ish
Characters: The Brothers Black
Genre: Angsty
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1488
Summary: A conversation shortly before the end of Sirius's seventh year.

Author's Note: Inspired by a line from Uneasy: Sirius thinks for a second that Peter looked like Regulus, the last time Sirius saw him, all sneering defiance masked with friendly words.

Regulus’s voice echoes down the corridor behind him, empty and soft, and Sirius hesitates, closes his eyes, sighs before turning around to look at his little brother. )

Title: Memory
Rating: teen-ish
Characters: Remus
Genre: Angsty
Warnings: None
Word Count: 247
Summary: Remus wakes up one cold morning after the full moon with a memory on his mind.

Author's Note: This is a remix of [info]planetgal471's fic, found here. More of a companion piece than a true remix.

It is a cold morning in February. Winter is on its way out, and it isn’t happy about it, sending biting winds and heavy storms in a bitter parting shot. )

Title: Uneasy
Rating: All ages
Characters: Marauders and Lily, from Sirius's POV
Genre: General
Warnings: None
Word Count: 539
Summary: "Sirius Black is often distracted, and likes being the centre of attention, and is sometimes so frustratingly obtuse that his friends wonder how they ever got a long to begin with. But he is also observant when he needs to be. And right now, his every sense is telling him that something is wrong."

Author's Note: This is a remix of [info]dorasolo's fic over here, which is a remix of [info]latenightcuppa's fic, found here, which in turn is a remix of [info]brownstudies fic here. (Whew!)

Sirius Black has never liked being alone. )

Title: It's Always The Quiet Ones
Rating: All ages
Characters: The Marauders
Genre: General
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2985
Summary: "Third Year has hardly begun when Sirius begins to realise that there is something odd about Remus. He is often gone, and although his tired eyes and sagging shoulders seem proof enough of his frequent claims of being ill, Sirius knows somehow that it isn’t the whole truth."

Author's Note: This serves as a kind of prequel to Truth Be Told, which I posted about a week and a half ago. If you haven't read that one yet, please read this first, so they'll be in the right order.

Also: By a complete coincidence, I actually got the dates here entirely correct. According to this calendar, the full moon in December '73, when this takes places, was on Monday the 10th, and therefore the following Tuesday was the 18th. How crazy is that?

There has always, Sirius thinks, been something quiet about Remus. )

Rating: All ages
Characters: The Marauders
Genre: General
Warnings: None
Word Count: 929
Summary: "So, when were you planning on telling us?" "I was hoping I'd never have to."

Author's Note: Written while on the plane flying to Montana to visit family. Also, this may end up being the first of a series, since there's at least one more bit that I want to write that comes after this.

Remus returns to his dormitory the morning after the full moon. )

Title: Seeds of Madness
Rating: Teen, for swearing. Lots of it.
Characters: Rook, mentions of others, particularly Thom
Genre: General
Warnings: Again, I must mention the swearing. I think I use the f-word about a dozen times.
Word Count: 640
Summary: Rook is pissed, and Thom's the reason why.

Author's Note: The title doesn't really have anything to do with the story. I just needed a title of some sort, and it seemed to fit.

It was the stupidest fucking situation in the world. )
